Technology for Third-Fifth Grade

Accelerated Math- This program is a supplemental math skills program. The teacher generates skills to be practiced and tested from the computer-based program. This program allows students to work on math levels ranging from first grade level through sixth grade level based on their level of proficiency. Teachers assign levels of work based on STAR math and other assessment tools. Students work with pencil and paper to complete their assignments.Answers are transferred to scan cards and assignments are scored through the computer. This program provides for a cycle of practice and testing. If additional work on skills is needed, teachers have the option of assigning optional 'exercises' that provide additional opportunities for learning needed skills.

Accelerated Reader- The program is used third through fifth grades to check reading practice. Students read a book from the library or other sources that are specially marked. The school presently has several thousand quizzes available. Students still present book reports and other forms of checking comprehension, but the days of reading the first few chapters and the last few chapters and skimming by are countered by the quizzes in AR. Quizzes check recall information throughout the entire book.

Classworks- This is a computer-based program that can be utilized for student work in the areas of reading skills, language skills, and math skills. Teachers assign skills lessons to be completed for classes or individuals. Options are available for self-paced work or teacher-paced assignments. Students work directly on the computer for this program.

Research and Report Writing- Students in third through fifth grade utilize a number of resources for research and report writing. The use of these resources varies according to grade level and student need. The library provides instruction and support for research on the Internet for sources such as Grolier's online encyclopedia and other similar sites. Students also learn valuable computer use skills in the computer lab. The combination of these sources assists students to utilize both computer-based information and information available in the school library. Microsoft Word and similiar writing programs are used throughout third through fifth grades for writing, editing, or spell-check options.

*Along with classroom textbooks, companies are beginning to provide both teacher and student technology resources. One example is a supplementary math program that allows for math skills reinforcement in the form of games and activities. Students work directly off the computer for this resource.
*Third through fifth grade teachers also arrange for learning opportunities in their classroom for computer-based projects and instruction based on their plan of studies for their class.
